Sage McKenna

DISCLAIMER: This is my birth story and it is long and talks about birth. So if you don't want to hear about birth don't read. Haha!

Sage McKenna Christensen

I lay here in my bed listening to the sweet sounds of my sleeping baby nearly 4 weeks from the beautiful day I brought our sweet baby girl Sage into this world. I am kicking myself for not opening the laptop at the hospital while everything was still so fresh in my mind. However, my memory will have to suffice.
Out of all 3 pregnancies, this one seemed to be exceptionally uncomfortable. Most days I felt as if I were a pregnant hippopotamus. In fact, a few weeks before her birth I laughed as I saw an elephant at the circus completely lie down and get back up again with more grace that I could muster at that time.  I had heartburn to the point of being sick, I cried myself to sleep numerous times as I could feel my muscles around my ribs being torn as my stomach ran out of room and my mind would race every night to the point I simply just could not sleep. It was a combination of all the excitement surrounding me as we just moved into our new house; unpacking, nesting, and being so excited for our sweet girl to arrive, that didn’t allow my mind to rest. I was ready for her to come!
A month before her due date, my midwife told me that she would be out of town the week of my due date on a cruise. From that moment, I gave myself a mental due date that would allow for me to go into labor while she was still in town, May 6th. Two nights before the 6th, I was giving up hope of going into labor a little early, so in my nightly prayers, I told Heavenly Father that I was ready to accept that she may not come when I wanted her to and that I was giving it to him. But, if he wanted I was ready and he could send her now.  Sure enough, the mind is amazing and so is God! At two o’clock in the morning on May 5th , I felt a little gush of liquid in my sleep. I awoke and my first thought was, “Ohhh, my water broke!”, but within the same thought, I figured, “surely not, I probably just peed the bed!” I quickly elbowed Wade and told him that I wasn’t sure if it was my waters or pee and I asked him to check because I was too embarrassed to find out I may just have peed my pants. However, my initial thought was correct; my water’s did in fact break! Yay! How exciting, this is everything I hoped and planned for, but why was I shaking so badly and why was I so nervous? My adrenaline was pumping through my body like crazy. I had to take a few deep breaths and just relax before I spazzed. I’ve done this two times before, but each labor/delivery brings a bit of uncertainty with it.  After I collected myself a little bit, I had Wade go wake up my sister Emily who was spending the night with her family while I called my midwife.  To my great disappointment, my midwife was at home alone with her young child, so she would not be able to make it to the hospital until 7:30am. What!?!? I go early and she still couldn’t make it? Now I was even more nervous. I was going to have a hospital birth without medication and without my midwife and oh, I didn’t have a written out birth plan! How was this going to work?
I wasn’t really having any contractions so I was a little scared that the labor was not progressing.  We quickly packed up my bags, jumped in the car, and headed to the hospital. I had a few contractions in the car and I was kind of exaggerating the intensity of them. At this point, Wade told me, “You are just playing mind games with yourself, they don’t hurt that bad. You are just scared because they are ‘supposed’ to be more intense after your water breaks.” While this statement may seem a bit cold to be said to a laboring woman, I think it is what got me through the labor and delivery as well as it did. I quickly responded, “Yeah, you’re right, they don’t hurt that bad, I’m not even sure they are real.” I had a few more. We checked into the E.R.. They wheeled me up to my room. I made sure to make it clear that I wanted the room with the tub! If there were to be a number 1 on my birth plan it would be that! We got the room with the tub, check! I undressed and she gave me my gown. I hopped on the bed. She checked me. I was hoping I was at least further than a 3 on the outside like I had been a week before.  I was a 6 and 85%! Wow, I guess those contractions were real! The nurses left for a bit.
With this birth, we decided to do it at Marietta Memorial in Ohio because we had heard good things and our last experience wasn’t terrible considering the process of my birth, but it was not what we wanted this time around. While the nurses left, I asked Wade what I was supposed to do. He didn’t know either.  When the nurse came back Wade asked, “So what is the procedure from here on out?” She was a bit confused and said, “What do you mean?” We explained that we were use to the nurses telling us what to do. She laughed and told me to do whatever I would like to do to try and be comfortable. We started the tub. Warm water. Lavender essential oils. Lights down low. Relaxing, meditation music playing. THIS IS LABOR. While it may not be an epidural in the back and no pain, or on the contrary, squatting in the woods with the sound of the babbling creek and birds chirping, it is what I wanted and needed. This was MY BIRTH and I was physically, mentally, and emotionally high on birthing this baby!
While soaking in the tub, I was overjoyed when my Mom and Emily arrived to cheer me on. I had a few really good contractions, but still not extremely painful. The ‘on call’ doctor arrived to see how I was feeling.  I maybe felt some pressure so I asked if she could check me. I was at nine centimeters. I decided to stand and lean on the bed now. The contractions were coming on stronger, but still not scary. I decided I wanted to try and push. I wanted to lie down to push; I didn’t feel like I could support myself. I did a little practice push… boy was I a rusty. With Aubrey I pushed for 15 minutes. With Liam it was 6 minutes. My goal was beat our record again.  I let my body have a few more hard contractions. As I labored through them I would read and reread the sign that was posted on the wall in front of me to keep my mind away from the pain. After reading it over a dozen times, I still can’t tell you what that darn sign said. Something about folding the chair! Sadly, that was my focal point. Next time I’ll bring my own sign, something a little more motivating and beautiful. Okay, I am ready to push again.  Push. Push. Push. Push. Keep it going Kate. Push. Push Push. At this point I tune back into the world for a second as I hear the nurse say, “Here comes the ‘Ring of Fire’!” Oh crap! I forgot about the ‘Ring of Fire!’ The burning came on slowly until it reached my toes. Almost like really strong warming lubricant! It only lasted a few seconds and there was her sweet head. One more strong push and she is here!!! 6:08 am. . 6lbs 11oz. and 19”. Four hours of labor and four minutes of pushing, I couldn’t be happier! Wade makes sure to remind me that there is certainly room for improvement.
Like with my first, her cord was short. I watched from above as she worked to get out her first cry. She was so grey and covered in vernix with a head full of dark hair. Then she mustered out her first cry, a beautiful little cry! After the cord stopped pulsating and was clamped and cut, she was laid on my chest. From this point on everything was done on my chest or in the small warm bed located in my room. My baby that I waited so long for was not leaving my side.  She looked just like her big brother and big sister! She was absolutely Beautiful and all ours.
A few hours and a couple naps later, after we were all cleaned up and moved, it was time to unite our whole family together. A little tap on the door brought the two brightest eyed big kids you could imagine. I was waiting for my babies to come, but for some reason when Aubrey and Liam came, my babies didn’t seem like babies at all! How did they grow up so fast in such a short time?  Aubrey new exactly what was going on and immediately gave her sister all the love she was bottling up for the last 9 months. Liam on the other hand wasn’t sure about things. However, when he saw her he started squealing and smiling the same way he does when he sees animals. He loves animals. He loves Sage. They both love Sage and are so good to her. We are family and I love us! With each new addition to our family, as we participate in such a spiritual experience, I could not feel closer with our Heavenly Father. I know that these sweet babies were brought to us from Heaven and I hope that I can always treat them with the upmost respect and love that our Father in Heaven does. They are our blessing.!

Snow much fun!

It seemed as if we were not going to get much snow this winter. We had a few days last week in the high 60s and it was amazing... However, all of a sudden the temperature dropped and so did the snow. We had a blast playing in the fluffy white stuff making snow men, snow angels, and having snow ball fights... We also enjoyed a nice big bowl of home made snow cream... Mmmmm Mmmmm was it good. Both my babies love the snow and I am so proud of them! I was worried especially about Liam because he wasn't dressed as warm as the other kids but, man, I think he had the most fun. Toward the end of his play time in the snow, he realized that the snow was actually edible and he just stuffed his little mouth full of it. Aubrey and Aleigha lasted the longest in the snow with me as we worked so hard on building a snowman. We were actually quite successful and built a huge snowman about my height. After coming back in the house I realized we were outside for an hour and a half. I haven't spent that much time playing in the snow in years and it was SNOW much fun!

Baby Bump

Baby #3 is growing very quickly. With my other two babies I have always measured a couple cm. Smaller than I should. However this baby, I am measuring a couple weeks bigger. Let's hope it's just me because I love delivering small babies.

Bed time cuddles.

This sweet girl loves to postpone bedtime as best as she can. " just one more story, one more show, 5 more minutes to play?" After she has used up all her" get out of bedtime free cards", I hold her hand until she falls asleep. She will fall asleep so quickly, as long as she can stop talking and let her little mind rest. I sure love putting her to bed though, I wouldn't trade this routine for any other. I love you sweet girl.

Happy Holidays!

I am well behind on the whole blog. I have basically dumped pictures in from the last 3 months (October- December 2012).  We have had so much fun at the end of the year with all the Holidays we love to celebrate! The kids are getting so big. Aubrey is 3 1/2 and Liam is 14months and Baby #3 is on the way and due the middle of May 3013! We are so excited about what the New Year has in store for us. Hopefully we can close on our first home. The home searching process has been a long and exhausting process so hopefully it will end soon. Anyways, I hope you enjoy all the pictures as I give you a little description of each.

 Aubrey Plays Soccer!
Miss A enjoyed her first year playing soccer. In the beginning it was rough. She wouldn't even walk on the field. Eventually she would go out if she was hold either Wade or I's hand. However, in the end she was running up and down that field and even kicked the ball once or twice. Most of the time you would find her and Brenton holding hands. We counted the two of them as 1 player.

Happy Halloween!

This is a picture of one of our many Halloween parties. We were scheduled to go to a party and we got the date mixed up so when we arrived with the kids in all their attire and no party, we decided to move it to our house. We had a parade around my house, a dance party, face painting, spooky stories, and yummy snacks and games. We ended up having a really great time.

Our tradition each year is to go to our favorite "Sweet Apple Farm" and pick pumpkins, see/feed the animals and go through the corn maze. We ditched our map and decided to go on our own because it would be "too easy." We ended up getting super lost and were excited when we saw the end (well actually we came out the entrance).

Liam and Aubrey milking the fake cow!

My proud babies and their adorable pumpkins they picked themselves.

Liam turns 1!
We had a Mustache themed birthday party for our Little Man. I made him a shirt that said, "If you MUSTACHE, it's my birthday" and everyone wore their customized mustache. We also had a mustache cake, and I even hand made mustache plates and cups. It was a fun party!
All the party guests with their Mustache's on

Christmas Celebrations!
Another favorite tradition of ours is to go to a little colonial fort called "Fort New Salem"
Aubrey got to decorate her own gingerbread man in the tavern.

She made her own candle by dipping her wick again and again in wax.

Liam enjoyed eating the cookies and watching Aubrey work.
They also had caroling around a tree as they lit it with real candles. It was so much fun to go to each workshop and learn about the culture of Christmas in that time period.

Poor Liam at least made it a whole year before he was forced to play princess' with his big sister.

Aubrey and Liam sitting on Santa's lap after one of our county parades. They got to sit on Santa's lap over 6 times this year. No wonder Santa new exactly what they wanted.

We went to a festival of trees that had numerous themed trees. However, Aubrey's favorite was the little "Hello Kitty" tree.

One morning we got up early and went to the State Park to have breakfast with Santa. Aubrey and Liam got to sit on Santa's lap several time this day while we were there.

Liam was having a difficult morning so Mrs. Clause stood up and came over to cheer him up. He absolutely LOVED it and so did Aubrey!

Our First real Snowy Day!
We were gone all day Christmas shopping, house hunting, and going to the baby doctor. We promised Aubrey no matter what time it was when we got home we could play in the snow.

 Three little Eskimos

We took Liam out one time last year but he was so little. This year was his first real play time in the snow. He Loved/ Hated it.  His gloves kept popping off and he would get a fist full of snow and it would make him so mad.  He and I quit a little early.

Aubrey and Daddy stayed out a little longer to add the finishing touches onto their adorable "Sammy the Snowman"

Christmas Eve!
All the adorable kiddies dressed up and performed the First Christmas for the adults to watch.

Next, we sang Happy Birthday to Jesus and cousin Sarah found the nut. Afterwards we bundled up and went Christmas Caroling on Gma and Pops road. It was so much fun.

After all the cousins went home and the house got quiet, we stayed the night and got settled in.
Pop helped Aubrey hang her stocking from the chimney with care!

Grandma helped her little buddy Liam hang his stocking too!

 My two little Christmas Angels.

Christmas Morning Magic!
Liam surprised to see all the presents wrapped under the tree.

Aubrey had such a hard time containing her excitement. She was so excited! She immediately started unwrapping the presents. We had to remind her several times that we had to read the label to see who it was for before we opened them all. I was so proud of how grateful she was. She would say things like, "Thanks Dad, You're the BEST!" or just randomly come up to me and hug me around the neck and say, "Thank you so much, this is the best Christmas EVER!" It made it all so worth it!

All the stocking were full with Christmas Goodies!

All the presents under the tree.

Even though our Little Man can't talk yet, he sure showed his appreciation as well. As soon as he was given his Elephant, he hugged it close to his face and laid down on the floor on top of it. Melted my heart!

Merry Christmas from our Family of 5 to yours!
A day or two after Christmas, we announced that baby #3 will be joining our family this coming May. We are so excited. I am actually 20 weeks already. We tried to keep it a secret until we had our first appointment but it was pretty difficult since I didn't go to the Dr. until I was already 19 weeks. We had an ultrasound and all looks good and healthy. We decided to NOT find out the gender. It was really hard especially when the technician kept asking, "Are you sure you don't want to know? I have it right here." She kept teasing us and would scroll around the legs and say, "I can show you right now." We held our ground though and will be surprised in May! Aubrey is hoping for a girl super bad.  Anyways, we hope you all had a Merry Christmas and we wish you a Happy New Year! We love and miss you all!

Recent Quotes by Little mess Aubrey:

1: " Sometimes I think I'm genius!"

2:: While Wade was away for work, Aubrey was crying for him and missing him when it was time for bed. I tried consoling her and she responded in a pitiful reply, "But every time I think about him it hurts." This made my heart melt and made me cry too.

3: I painted Aubrey's face like a witches with some old Halloween face paint. Then she made some of her own adjustments and was loving her new look. However, the paint was getting all over everything because it was caked on her face very thick. I put her in the tub and she was refusing to wash her face. I tried persuading her by saying, "but I love your Aubrey face and I will miss it.", without any pause she replies, "Don't worry Mommy, even if I look like a witch, I will still be your sweet Aubrey." How do you respond to that one?

Poor Liam got his face painted as well by his lovely big sister.                                                                                                            I love the look on his face in this picture. He looks like                                                                                               like he thinks this face painting stuff is completely ridiculous.

Summer kick off 2012

We have kicked off our summer by going camping & boating for 4 weeks in a row now. Soon, we will be headed to Utah and Idaho to visit our family and friends. Since Liam was born we have had a lot of stress in our lives but as of a few weeks ago, our stress has disappeared and so many blessings are headed our way. For instance, Wade just got a new job! I am so excited for him and proud of him. His teaching job was a good one and he loved the people he worked with, but when this new opportunity arose, he had to take it. He will now be working for UNOh as a recruiter for the automotive department. That along with many other little things are really making us feel blessed.
Our babies are growing up so fast and it's hard to believe Aubrey will be three next month and Liam is already over 1/2 a year old. They bring us so much joy every single day. Aubrey knows so much and baffles us every day at the silly and incredibly smart things she says. She uses the words like fragile and artificial often. When she learns a new word she is so proud of herself and has to practice it. She loves the movie Tangled and likes to watch it daily. She makes her mommy and daddy so proud of her with how crazy fun she is. She loves camping in the "temple". When setting up our tent last year, she heard us say "tent pole" and thought we said temple. Now whenever she sings "I Love to See the Temple." we know what she is really in visioning. In addition, she is an awesome boating girl! She is so relaxed while on the boat that often times, she falls asleep. But when she is not sleeping, she is tubing with "no hands" ( and daddy doesn't go that easy on her either). Last week she and I were both thrown from the tube and she just laughed and laughed about it. Swimming with her noodle is another favorite of hers. Last week the proudest moment for daddy was when she let him take her knee boarding and she loved it! She is such a fun little girl and we love having her spice up our life!
Liam too, is growing up so fast. That tiny little 6lb 14oz baby has turned into the cutest little butter ball you could imagine. He is such a happy little boy. If you even give him the slightest bit of attention, he will light up with the biggest smile imaginable. He has masters the army crawl about 3 weeks ago and is getting into everything. He loves eating dirt, grass, and sand which have all been in his access since we have been camping regularly. The other day I found sand in his dirty diaper-poor boy. He loves his big sister so much, if there is one thing that can guarantee a laugh from him it would be her. He is about ready to sprout his two bottom teeth and like to chew on anything hard and dangerous which keeps mommy on her toes. We love his little personality so much and love the awesomeness he adds to our family.
I feel like our family is like a yummy cookie recipe. When it was just Wade and I, we're were like the plain dough, sweet and yummy. When Aubrey came along it was liking adding the chocolate chips. Now that Liam is here we added the yummy walnuts. Now are cookies are really yummy! I love my little family and I am proud of each of them!
